The next big project revolves around Equitrans, an indirect subsidiary of EQT formed in 1988. It has nearly 600 miles of pipeline and provides gathering, storage, and transmission services to Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Fritz said it was built to handle up to 800,000 million decatherms a day of capacity. Major upgrades could triple its capacity within five years. The first project phase is expected to be complete as early as 2010. In total, the company is currently working on 10 non-jurisdictional and FERC-regulated pipeline projects.
The Equitrans pipeline runs through the heart of the Marcellus Shale fairway and has the potential to transport Marcellus gas produced by EQT and other producers to five interstate pipelines—Texas Eastern, Tennessee, Dominion, Columbia, and National Fuel Gas. Equitrans plans to make capital expenditures of $650 to $700 million to upgrade the pipeline to transport Marcellus production. Upgrades are projected to lead to the transportation of an additional 1.1 billion cubic feet of gas per day.
