Tioga County located in northeast Pennsylvania alongside the New York State border sandwiched between Bradford County to the east and Potter County to the west.
According to a June, 2009 report, three gas exploration and production companies, Chesapeake Energy, East Resources, and Fortuna Energy were expected to have more than 100 drilling permits by the end of 2009 issued by Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
Tioga, as well as Bradford and Susquehanna Counties, located on an axis between Williamsport, PA and Elmira, NY, are considered to be one of the sweet spots of the Marcellus shale formation due to the high levels of accumulation of organic matter as well as the thickness of the shale in this area.
