The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is the agency that manages the city's drinking water supply ensuring that 9 million New Yorkers, as well as residents of Orange, Putnam, Ulster and Westchester counties, have access to over one billion gallons of water per day.
DEC is also responsible for protecting the watershed for the city's drinking water supply. Pursuant to this mission, it has acquired more than 108,000 acres of sensitive lands. It has also upgraded wastewater plants to the highest level of treatment, worked with farmers to limit agricultural runoff, as well as to assist in areas with substandard septic systems.
The agency has been instrumental in getting citizens involved in studying the impact on the city's unfiltered water supply of Marcellus shale natural gas drilling in its upstate New York watershed.
