The Haynesville shale formation is a richly-organic black shale rock from the Jurassic age that underlies much of the Gulf Coast area of the United States, and is on both sides of the Texas– Louisiana border.

It is generally found at a depth that exceeds 11,000 feet, and its vertical thickness ranges from 200 to 270 feet.

The first significant production from this formation was in 2005, and, as of 2010, is currently undergoing rapid development.
