Georgetown, Texas-based J. Howard Bass & Associates (JHB&A) is an exploration and production company which, among other things according to its web site, owns a 50 to 100% working interest in 300,000 acres of coal bed methane drilling rights in West Virginia.

A news account appeared in September, 2009 indicating that JHB&A planned to hold meetings with area landowners in the city of Washington, county seat of Washington County, Pennsylvania. The city is located roughly 30 miles southwest of Pittsburgh and is considered to be part of the Pittsburgh metro area. The company had contacted the landowners regarding leasing property for a potential Marcellus shale drilling program. The report indicated that 6,500 area landowners had prospective property suitable for development.
