Centre County, Pennsylvania is located in the middle of the state immediately east of Clearfield County and directly south of Clinton County. It is the home of Penn State. Marcellus shale exploration activities have so far focused on townships in the eastern and northern portions of the county including those of Burnside, Curtin, Rush, and Snow Shoe.

Roughly 20 Marcellus shale wells had been drilled in the county as of May, 2010, and the number was expected to increase in the near future. This represented a doubling since January. There were 113 active well permits.

Two pipeline projects were underway as of May:

  1. Superior Appalachian Pipeline LLC through Snow Shoe and Burnside townships.
  2. Anadarko Petroleum through Centre and Clinton counties.

By September, 2010, the number of wells drilled had once again doubled to 41. Anadarko had drilled 21 wells, followed by EXCO Resources with 18, and Range and Carrizo each one well apiece.
