A well plat is a formal plot of the drilling unit prepared by a professional surveyor. It outlines and identifies the acreage included in the drilling unit as well as the surface and mineral ownership and that of adjacent properties. Streets, roads and nearby geographic permanent land subdivisions are labeled. If it is a horizontal well, the perpendicular distance from both the surface and target to the nearest unit line as well as land subdivisions should be noted. Distance should also be recorded to buildings, roads, railroads and streams within a 200 foot radius.

In addition to the surveyors name and contact information, the plat should include the applicant’s name, well name, well number, county, township, permanent land subdivision (section, lot, tract, etc), USGS quadrangle name, state plane coordinates, surface and mineral interest owner, drill unit size, ground level elevation, map scale and the date the plat was prepared.
