Columbia County, Pennsylvania is located in the northeastern portion of the state immediately west of Luzerne County and south of Lycoming and Sullivan counties.
As of November 2010, Columbia Co. had been little explored and seen very little Marcellus shale drilling activity.
Some of the companies at the time with leases in the county include:
- Citrus Energy - owned leases but sold them to Williams (see below)
- Williams who picked up the Citrus leases and have three well sites planned:
- On the Farver and Campbell farms in Benton
- The Martin site in Sugarloaf Township
- Chief Oil & Gas - had several wells planned with drilling to begin in 2011. These included ones on the Niedzwiecki farm on Route 118 in Sugarloaf Township and the Remley farm in Jackson Township.
- XTO Energy - had applied for drilling permits on the Houseweart and Levan farms in Pine Township.
