Denver, Colorado-based WhitMar Exploration Co. is an independent oil and gas exploration and production company.
According to a September, 2009 report the company had been actively leasing Marcellus shale drilling rights in in northeast Pennsylvania's Luzerne County, home of the city of Wilkes-Barre. WhitMar had leased 22,000 acres in Dallas, Fairmont, Hunlock, Huntington, Jackson, Lake, Lehman, Ross and Union townships as well as in the northwest of Plymouth township. It's standard offer apparently provided only small sums upfront, but with a contractual obligation to begin applying for permits within one year and start drilling within two.
The company was in the process of undertaking seismic testing for its acreage in the county, and well siting was to be, in part, based upon the results.
In November, 2009 there was news of an exploratory agreement between WhitMar and EnCana Corp to develop 25,000 acres in Luzerne and Columbia counties. EnCana committed itself to two exploratory wells which it intended to finance and be well operator. WhitMar was to retain a 25% working interest with the balance going to EnCana. Future expanision of drilling on the WhitMar leasehold under the agreement was to depend upon the success of these first two wells.
By November, 2010 Encana announced that it had stopped any further development in both Luzerne and Columbia counties. It had drilled two pilot wells in Luzere Co. and concluded from its experience in these two counties that commercially viable wells were unlikely to be drilled there.
