Environmental concerns
From Wikimarcellus
During 2009-2010, Environmental concerns received increasing publicity from activist and grassroots orgainizations such as the Damascus Citizens for Sustainability and the Delaware Riverkeeper Network. Many towns and municipalities turned to western states for advice and guidance about potential environmental issues since shale drilling had already been well underway there for years.
Several activist videos appeared condemning the drilling industry for its seeming indifference to the public's worries about possible contamination of drinking water. The industry soon responded with a few of its own videos.
Hydro-fracturing, a proven technique used for decades, in the context of pumping high volumes of drilling fluid in horizontal drilling, began to be thought of by more than a few commentators and politicians as controversial.
