Edmond, Oklahoma-based Bronco Drilling Company, Inc. (NASDAQ:BRNC) is a provider of contract drilling services throughout the U.S. and Mexico. As of March, 2011, it had 22 operating rigs primarily deployed in the Bakken Shale, but the Marcellus shale was also a focus of its operations.
In March, 2011 Bronco was cited by WVDEP for a drilling mud spill into a creek on a Marcellus shale drilling site in northern West Virginia. More information about it is available on the Antero Resources wiki page.
In April, 2011 an agreement was announced with Chesapeake Energy to acquire Bronco for $315 million in cash. Its 22 rigs were to be absorbed into Chesapeake subsidiary Nomac Drilling LLC, which already owned 95 rigs--90 of these were under contract to Chesapeake. At the time Chesapeake was fielding 160 drilling rigs overall and planned to expand the total to 200 by year-end 2012.
