Houston, Texas-based Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE: MRO) reportedly is the fourth largest U.S. integrated energy company and the country's fifth largest refiner. It controls 70,000 acres in the Marcellus shale play in the states of Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
In Septeber, 2009 Mason Dixon Energy Inc was reported to have been leasing land on behalf of Marathon in Preston County, WV in an area two miles east of Kingwood along the Cheat River.
A company update in November, 2009 noted that Marathon had spud its first Marcellus shale well during the third quarter of 2009 and planned to spud three more before the end of the year.
In February, 2011 Marathon and Triana Energy made an agreement to develop 82,000 acres of Marcellus shale in Fayette County, PA and several northern West Virginia counties. More information about this is available on the Triana Energy wiki page.
