Quebec is a province in eastern Canada that on its south is bordered by four U.S. states: Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. The province of Ontario is on its western border and the Gulf of St. Lawrence is to its east as well as the provinces of Labrador, New Brunswick and Newfoundland. Those areas most prospective for natural gas in the province including the Gaspé Peninsula are considered part of the Appalachian Basin.
Quebec is home to a burgeoning natural gas exploration play in the Saint Lawrence Lowlands. As of September, 2010 the provincial government had issued permits to 13 companies to explore for natural gas. To date, these organizations had invested approximately $135 million and drilled 28 exploratory wells.
The area is also believed to be prospective for the Trenton-Black River formation.
