Denver, Colorado-based Petoskey Exploration LLC is an oil and gas exploration and production company involved in the Utica shale play in the northern Michigan basin. Its joint venture partner is Energy West Michigan LLC which leased 200,000 acres of Michigan shale in 2008 located in Cheboygan, Crawford, Kalkaska, Missaukee, and (nonproducing) Emmet counties.
A report appeared in April, 2010 about the flaring of an exploratory well after hydro-fracturing it about 30 miles southeast of Traverse City, MI.
Located in Missaukee County, the well is known as Petoskey Pioneer 1-3, and was permitted to a depth of 9,000 feet with a 5,000 foot lateral. The vertical pilot hole was said to have bottomed in the Trenton-Black River just below the Utica shale.
