Many of the leases there were with Norse Energy, a company that has drilled a approximately 60 wells mainly to the Herkimer formation. Norse also holds leases in in the towns of Hamilton and Nelson. Eight other companies have leased in Madison Co. too, but as of April, 2010 only Norse had ever done any drilling there. So far, only one or two Marcellus shale wells have been drilled in Madison Co.
