Houston, Texas-based National Oilwell Varco is a supplier of systems and components used in oil and gas drilling and production. It is the maker of the Drake rig specifically made for the terrain and drilling of Marcellus shale wells. The company expects to be making deliveries of the rig during the first quarter of 2009.
In order to accommodate the rugged Appalachian terrain a rig would need to have a relatively small footprint, great mobility, and the ability to drill in excess of 6,000 feet vertically and 3,000 feet horizontally.
