In September, 2008, Houston, Texas-based Cabot Oil and Gas Corp. was reported to be actively drilling in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. It paid a fine to the Susquehanna River Basin Commission of $375,000 for not complying with limits on water withdrawal for wells in Dimock and Springville townships. As of this date, a dozen well pads have been set up. The company reportedly holds permits for drilling 18 more wells here. The Marcellus shale is at one of its thickest point in Susquehanna County, Pa.

Cabot has also been reported active in Sullivan County, New York where there is a reservoir that contributes to New York City's drinking water supply.
