Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania is located in the southwestern part of the state, east of Pittsburgh. It is considered part of the Pittsburgh metro area.
According to a June, 2010 report, between January and May of the same year, PDEP had issued 24 drilling permits. 13 Marcellus shale wells were drilled.
