Brockway, Pennsylvania-based Prochemtech has develped a process for removing pollutants from frac water. Working with Centre Hall-based Nittany Engineering Associates, Prochemtech has developed a patent-pending process which removes the highly toxic barium from the frac water as well as the scale forming minerals. This allows recycling of the water for additional hydro-fracturing.
The barium is precipitated out of the frac water by adding a sulfate to it which combines with the barium to create barium sulfate "chunks". These chunks are insoluble and non-toxic, and can then be removed from the water.
Calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, and strontium are then precipitated out by reacting them with carbonates and hydroxides.
