The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) is the state agency in charge of leasing Pennsylvania's state public forest land. 75% of this land or 1.5 million acres has the Marcellus shale formation underneath it. So far 74,000 acres have been leased to drilling companies, and the Department is planning to lease yet another 74,000 acres during 2009.

Update: As of August, 2010 almost 139,000 acres of state forest land had been leased to drilling companies since 2008. DCNR regarded its Marcellus shale acreage to be essentially fully leased.
