Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania is located in the northeastern portion of the state and bordered on the north by Broome County, New York. Bradford County, PA is to its west, and Wayne County, PA is east. The Pennsylvania counties of Wyoming and Lackawanna stretch across its southern edge. Along with Bradford Co., it is one of the two most productive counties in the Marcellus shale play. Bradford and Susquehanna counties accounted for nearly half of the the state's Marcellus production.

In nine months, one very prolific well in Susquehanna Co. produced enough natural gas alone to fuel up to 29,600 households for one full year.

During 2010, Chesapeake Energy's Clapper 2H well in Susquehanna Co. was the most productive one in the county with 2.8 Bcf of production for the first nine months of 2010. Cabot Oil & Gas' Smith 3H Susquehanna well was most productive one in the state based upon those wells producing for longer than 30 days. It had averaged 11 Mmcf/d for over four months in 2010.
