Brookville, Pennsylvania-based Hanley and Bird, Inc is a family-run oil and gas exploration and production company specializing in developing leases on U.S. National Forest lands, state forest land, state game preserves, and on private land. The company operates over 700 wells in several western Pennsylvania counties.

A news account noted in July, 2010 that Hanley and Bird planned to drill a Marcellus shale well on Pine Run (headwaters of Big Mill Creek) in Elk County, Pennsylvania within the Allegheny National Forest (ANF). The well was to be located approximately 14 miles north of the Borough of Ridgway (the county seat) directly west of State Route 948.
